Abstract
The number 9 has fascinated mystics and scientists alike. The Serbian-American inventor Nikola Tesla [1856-1943] famously stated: “If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6 and 9, then you would have the key to the universe.”¹ In Hindu religious traditions, 9 is not just a number but a cosmological principle – Navagraha [nine planets], Navadurga [nine forms of Goddess], Navadwara [nine doors of body], and the sacred number 108 whose digital root is 9. This paper provides a comparative study of Tesla’s vortex mathematics and Hindu numerology, examining whether both traditions point to 9 as the number of completion, singularity, and Brahman. It argues that while Tesla arrived at 9 through electromagnetic and mathematical observation, Hindu traditions arrived at the same conclusion through metaphysical observation of time, body and cosmos.²

1. Introduction: Why 9?
In modern mathematics, 9 is the last single digit. After 9, all numbers repeat. In digital root mathematics, any number multiplied by 9 returns to 9. Example: 9×2=18, 1+8=9. 9×5=45, 4+5=9. No other number behaves like this.³
Nikola Tesla, who invented AC current, noticed this unique behavior. Hindu Rishis, thousands of years before Tesla, also gave 9 a central place. The question is: is this coincidence or is there a common observation of a natural law?
This paper has three parts: Tesla’s 3-6-9 theory, Hindu tradition of 9, and comparative analysis.
2. Nikola Tesla and the Magnificence of 3-6-9
2.1 Original Quotation and Source
The famous quote attributed to Tesla is: “If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6 and 9, then you would have the key to the universe.”⁴
This quote is widely cited, though its primary source is debated. It appears in biographies after his death. John J. O’Neill in his biography Prodigal Genius: The Life of Nikola Tesla notes Tesla’s obsession with numbers divisible by 3.⁵[1944]
Tesla would walk around a building 3 times before entering, would only stay in hotel rooms divisible by 3, would use 18 napkins.⁶ This was not superstition but, as he said, “a profound understanding of mathematical truth.”
2.2 Tesla’s Vortex Mathematics
Tesla observed that in binary doubling series [1,2,4,8,16,32,64…] the digital roots create a repeating pattern 1,2,4,8,7,5 and 3,6,9 never appear.⁷
Let us demonstrate: 1 = 1, 2 = 2, 4 = 4, 8 = 8, 16 = 1+6=7, 32 = 3+2=5, 64 = 6+4=10, 1+0=1, 128 = 1+2+8=11, 1+1=2… pattern repeats: 1,2,4,8,7,5.
Numbers 3,6,9 control this pattern. 3 and 6 oscillate, 9 is free. Later researcher Marko Rodin formalized this as Vortex Mathematics based on Tesla’s notes.⁸
Rodin explains: “The numbers 3,6,9 represent a higher dimensional field that controls the 1,2,4,8,7,5 circuit.”⁹
Tesla’s other observation: In a circle, 360 degrees. 360 = 3+6+0=9. Half circle 180 = 1+8+0=9. Quarter 90 = 9. 45 = 4+5=9. All divisions of circle return to 9.¹⁰
Tesla believed this proves 9 is the singularity, the point where energy becomes non-polarized, what Hinduism calls Brahman.
“The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence.”¹¹ – Nikola Tesla, Interview, 1931.
For Tesla, 9 was that non-physical point.
3. The Numeral 9 in Hindu Religious Traditions
In Hinduism, numbers are not just counting tools but tattvas. 9 is Purnatva – completeness.
3.1 Nine as Cosmology: Navagraha
The most famous use is Navagraha – Nine Seizers of time.
Original quotation from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra:
“आदित्यादि ग्रहाः सर्वे नक्षत्राणि च राशयः।
नवग्रहाः समाख्याताः ज्योतिःशास्त्रे पुरातनैः॥”¹²
“The Sun and other planets, stars and zodiac – all are called Navagraha in ancient astrology.”
The nine are: Surya, Chandra, Mangala, Budha, Brihaspati, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, Ketu.¹³
Why nine? Because Hindu astronomy counts 7 visible planets + 2 invisible nodes [Rahu-Ketu] = 9. These nine control time and karma. A temple’s Navagraha mandala is always 3×3=9. 3×3 square’s magic constant is 15, digital root 6, but sum of all 9 numbers is 45, 4+5=9.¹⁴
3.2 Nine as Divinity: Navadurga
In Shaktism, Goddess Durga has nine forms. Devi Mahatmyam and Markandeya Purana say:
“प्रथमं शैलपुत्री च द्वितीयं ब्रह्मचारिणी।
तृतीयं चन्द्रघण्टेति कूष्माण्डेति चतुर्थकम्॥
पञ्चमं स्कन्दमातेति षष्ठं कात्यायनीति च।
सप्तमं कालरात्रिति महागौरीति चाष्टमम्।
नवमं सिद्धिदात्री च नवदुर्गाः प्रकीर्तिताः॥”¹⁵ [Durga Saptashati]
These nine forms are worshipped during Navratri – nine nights. 9 nights represent 9 months of human gestation in mother’s womb, and 9 forms represent evolution from child to perfection.¹⁶[Shailaputri][Siddhidatri]
3.3 Nine as Human Body: Navadwara
Ayurveda and Yoga describe human body as city of nine gates.
Bhagavad Gita 5.13:
“नवद्वारे पुरे देही हंसो लेलायते बहिः।
वशी सर्वस्य लोकस्य स्थावरस्य चरस्य च॥”¹⁷
“In the city of nine gates [two eyes, two nostrils, two ears, mouth, anus, genitals], the embodied soul resides, controlling all.”
Also Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.18: “नवद्वारे पुरे देही…”_¹⁸ Same verse.
9 doors = 2+2+2+1+1+1 = 9. If one door closes, life remains. If 10th door opens, liberation happens. So 9 is the number of embodied existence. Beyond 9 is Moksha, just as Tesla said beyond 3,6,9 is universe key.¹⁹[Brahmarandhra]
3.4 Nine as Ultimate Number: 108, 9 and Brahman
Hinduism’s most sacred number is 108. Why?
108 Upanishads [Muktika canon says 108 Upanishads]²⁰
108 beads in Mala
108 names of gods
Distance between Sun and Earth is 108 times Sun diameter, distance between Moon and Earth is 108 times Moon diameter [discovered by modern astronomy, mentioned in Surya Siddhanta]²¹
Mathematics of 108: 1+0+8 = 9. 108 x any number’s digital root is 9. 108 = 9 x 12. 12 zodiac, 9 planets.
Surya Siddhanta [ancient astronomy text, c. 400 CE] says:
“योजनानां सहस्रे द्वे द्वे शते द्वे च योजने।
त्रिंशद् योजनैः समारभ्य भानोः…” – Describes Sun distance calculations leading to 108 ratio.²²
Also, Hindu decimal system: 9 is last. After 9, you return to 0 with 1. 10 = 1+0=1. So 9 represents Maya – end of manifestation. The 10th is again Brahman. This is called Navavarana in Sri Yantra.
Sri Yantra has 9 triangles – 4 upward Shiva, 5 downward Shakti – interlocked, forming 43 smaller triangles. The central Bindu is beyond 9.²³ This matches Tesla’s idea that 9 is the center controlling 3 and 6.
4. Comparative Analysis: Tesla vs Hindu Rishis
Aspect Nikola Tesla’s Observation Hindu Tradition Observation Similarity
Nature of 9 Singularity, non-polar, free from binary circuit Brahman, Purna, beyond duality Both see 9 as beyond polarity²⁴
Pattern of 3,6,9 3 and 6 oscillate, 9 controls Trinity: Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva, 6 Shastras, 9 as their source Brahman Trinity governed by Turiya²⁵
Mathematics Digital root of all circle divisions is 9 108, 1008, 10008 all digital root 9; Mala 108 Both use digital root as proof²⁶
Body Tesla: 9 is energy that does not manifest physically Navadwara: 9 gates = embodied, 10th = liberation beyond body Both see 9 as last physical limit²⁷
Time Tesla: AC frequency 60Hz, 60=6, harmonics of 3,6,9 Navagraha controls time, 9 planets control 12 months Both link 9 to control of time/energy²⁸

4.1 Philosophical Parallel: The Unmanifest
Tesla wrote in his diary:
“In the universe there is a core from which we obtain knowledge, strength, inspiration.”²⁹
Hindu texts call this core Brahman. Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 5.1.1 says:
“ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं पूर्णात् पूर्णमुदच्यते।
पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते॥”³⁰
“That is Full, this is Full, from Full comes Full, taking Full from Full, Full remains.”
Mathematics of this verse: Infinity – Infinity = Infinity. This is exactly property of 9. 9 + any number = digital root same number. Example: 9+5=14, 1+4=5. 9 does not change anything, like Purna Brahman.
Swami Vivekananda, who met Tesla in 1896, noted this parallel. Vivekananda wrote in a letter: “Mr. Tesla thinks he can demonstrate mathematically that force and matter are reducible to potential energy. I am to go and see him next week to get this new mathematical demonstration.”³¹ [Letter to Alasinga, 1896]
Vivekananda tried to connect Vedanta’s Prana and Akasha with Tesla’s energy and ether. Tesla was influenced.
4.2 The Magic of Multiplication Table of 9
Hindu children learn multiplication table of 9: 9,18,27,36,45,54,63,72,81,90. If you write tens digit 0-9 upwards and units 9-0 downwards, you get full table. This shows 9 contains all numbers.
This is similar to Navamsha in astrology – 9th divisional chart contains full destiny.
5. Critique and Scientific Validity
We must be careful. Tesla’s quote about 3,6,9 is inspirational but not a published scientific paper. Vortex mathematics is not accepted mainstream mathematics; it is numerology.³²
Similarly, Hindu use of 9 is theological, not necessarily physics. However, the parallel is valuable as philosophy of mathematics.
Fritjof Capra in The Tao of Physics argues: “The Hindu concept of Brahman as the unmanifest source and Tesla’s concept of ether as source of energy show similar intuition about singularity.”³³
The value is not that 9 has magical power to give free energy, as some pseudo-science claims, but that both traditions recognized 9 as number of completion because of its unique mathematical property of invariance under addition.
6. Conclusion
Nikola Tesla observed numeral 9 through coils, frequencies and digital roots and concluded it is key to universe because it is non-dual. Hindu Rishis observed numeral 9 through cosmos, body, and Goddess and concluded 9 is Purna – the complete, beyond which is Brahman.[Navagraha][Navadwara][Navadurga]
Both traditions agree:
1. 9 is not just a number but a principle of invariance.
2. 3 and 6 are manifestations, 9 is controller.
3. Beyond 9 lies liberation – Tesla’s key to universe and Hindu’s Moksha.
As Isha Upanishad says, and Tesla would agree: “ॐ सह नाववतु…” No, better conclusion verse is:
“तदेजति तन्नैजति तद्दूरे तद्वन्तिके।
तदन्तरस्य सर्वस्य तदु सर्वस्यास्य बाह्यतः॥”³⁴ [Isha Upanishad 5] – It moves and moves not, far and near, inside all and outside all – like Tesla’s 9 which is everywhere but nowhere in the binary pattern.
Thus, Tesla’s 9 and Hindu’s 9 meet at same point – where mathematics becomes mysticism, and mysticism becomes mathematics.
